$7.5M MURI grant will support research on tensor networks for high-dimensional computing

Professor of Applied Mathematics Daniele Venturi is part of a project team recently awarded a five-year, $7.5 million from the Department of Defense’s (DoD) highly competitive Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) program.

The project seeks to develop a new mathematical framework for the modeling and simulation of high-dimensional partial differential equations, which are relevant to a wide range of DoD applications, such as clean energy systems and hypersonic flight. The team’s primary focus will be on applications for plasma physics, but intend for their methodologies to be used in many application areas.

The project team includes Venturi along with Principal Investigator and Professor at the University of Delaware’s Jingmei Qiu, Professor at Stanford University Lexing Ying, Professor at Michigan State Andrew Christlieb, University of Washington Associate Professor Jingwei Hu, and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Associate Professor Edgar Solomonik.

Through close collaboration, the team will develop an interlocking research framework to advance tensor network algorithms for high-dimensional partial differential equations (PDEs). Venturi will particularly contribute through his expertise and long standing experience in tensor methods for PDEs uncertainty quantification, and kinetic modeling of stochastic systems.
