BS in Computer Science: Game Design

Recipients of a BS in Computer Science: Game Design degree at UCSC are expected to have the following skills and experiences:

  1. Recognize the context in which a computer system may function, including its interactions with people and the physical world.
  2. Demonstrate proficiency of Computer Science in the core knowledge areas of Data Structures and Software Engineering.
  3. Apply systems-level thinking and abstractions within the context of interactive applications.
  4. Recognize and take into account the social, legal, ethical, and cultural issues in the discipline of computer games.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of visual interaction design and artistic practices in domains involving playful interactions
  6. Demonstrate written and oral communication skills regarding technical material about computer games, broadly conceived.
  7. Design a technical system that achieves artistic goals for audience experience.
  8. Demonstrate the ability to collaboratively plan, organize, and execute complex, team-oriented projects, using appropriate communication and coordination techniques.

Masters of Science in Games and Playable Media

Recipients of the MS in Games and Playable Media degree at UCSC are expected to have the following skills and experiences:

  1. Demonstrate mastery of Games and Playable Media in the following core knowledge areas:

    • Game Mechanics, Game Systems and Core Loop Definition and Design

    • Game Programming, Engines and System Architecture

    • Game Industry Standards, Procedures, Affiliations and Groups

    • Procedural Rhetoric and Narrative Design

    • Game Audio Design and Integration

    • Game Art Pipeline and Integration

  2. Apply creative skills and knowledge of current market conditions to craft game concepts and feature sets.

  3. Create a game from prototype to launch demonstrating knowledge in:

    • Professional Presentation Standards

    • State of the Game Market, Particularly Indie Games

    • Marketing

    • Self Promotion and Conference Submission

  4. Receive, respond to and integrate industry feedback through various milestones toward a polished product.

  5. Manage a team of artists and sound designers to provide necessary content for a finished game.
