Dean's Welcome Message

Alexander Wolf

Welcome!

The Baskin School of Engineering at UC Santa Cruz is unique among engineering schools. By offering non-traditional programs of study and opportunities to engage in exciting collaborative research across campus and with industry partners, the Baskin School of Engineering represents a new kind of engineering school: an engineering school for the 21st century.

The student experience.

At the Baskin School of Engineering, we seek to provide a holistic education to our students. We help students see the value of collaboration, and we provide opportunities and tools for truly interdisciplinary partnerships. In this way, we are shaping engineers of the future, who will have the knowledge and skills to seek collaborative solutions to emerging challenges.

Here on the UC Santa Cruz campus, and just over the hill in Silicon Valley, Baskin School of Engineering students work beside world-class faculty and industry experts. Opportunities for research and internships with local tech companies give graduate and undergraduate students hands-on experience. Thriving research centers foster interdisciplinary collaborations, while resources such as the Center for Research in Open Source Software provide opportunities for commercialization of student-driven discoveries.

Numerous student groups and organizations provide opportunities for professional development, extracurricular experiences, and friendships that extend well beyond graduation.

The environment.

When it comes to location, it’s hard to imagine a better spot than the one occupied by the Baskin School of Engineering. Located on California’s central coast, the UC Santa Cruz campus looks south across the Monterey Bay and is surrounded by redwood trees. We are less than 40 miles from Silicon Valley, and we also have strong connections with the growing number of tech startups and companies in the Santa Cruz area.

The research environment at the Baskin School of Engineering is dynamic and interdisciplinary, filled with opportunities for cross-campus collaborations among faculty, researchers and students. These collaborations allow us to excel in areas that clearly transcend traditional academic disciplines. Areas like human-computer interaction, cyber-physical systems, data science, serious games, natural language processing, and assistive technologies for people with disabilities.

The Baskin School of Engineering at UC Santa Cruz offers the best of all worlds: a major research university in a beautiful setting, with a strong commitment to research, graduate training and undergraduate education. This is an exciting time to be part of the School as we continue to grow and enhance our programs to maintain national eminence. I encourage students to fully embrace and take full advantage of the rich learning environment available at UC Santa Cruz. For supporters and potential collaborators in industry, federal laboratories, and elsewhere, I enthusiastically welcome your interest in the Baskin School of Engineering. Please do not hesitate to contact me, our staff, or any of our faculty members to pursue opportunities for collaborations.
