Computer scientist Michael Mateas to speak on "serious games" October 29

Michael Mateas, associate professor of computer science in the Baskin School of Engineering, will give a lecture on "Serious Games" on Thursday, October 29, at 4 p.m. in the Current Periodicals Room of the Science & Engineering Library.

The talk is part of "Synergy: Explorations in Science and Society," a lecture series sponsored by the University Library.

Mateas was recently selected as the first holder of the MacArthur Foundation Chair at UCSC. Combining artificial intelligence, game design, and art, his research in computer gaming is pushing the frontiers of interactive entertainment and pioneering new models of training. His work aims to transform gaming into a key expressive medium throughout society. Mateas will share some of the ground-breaking research projects taking place at UCSC's Expressive Intelligence Studio.
