What brought you to UC Santa Cruz?

I’ve been living in the Bay Area for quite some time. I was working at a national lab and making the switch to academia was something in the back of my mind. UC Santa Cruz has a burgeoning data science program and that’s something I wanted to be a part of.

What do you like about BSOE?

I like the fact that things are a little laid back here in Santa Cruz. That atmosphere allows me to work without stress.

Do you have any advice for students?

One thing I’d like to tell students has to do with the genius myth. There are all these stories about geniuses who make things happen like Steve Jobs and Elon Musk. The effect that has on students is they often feel like, “I’m not that genius and therefore, I cannot contribute.” The myth is false. Most of these people succeed with the help of other people in the background who we don’t see. We hear a lot about Mark Zuckerberg being a college dropout but what we don’t hear about so much is the fact that there is an array of Ph.D.s behind the scenes. The myth can turn them off and I think it’s really important to bust that myth and also for students to realize there’s actually a lot of hard work that goes into it.
