Abstract 

IoT brings unprecedented interactions of the Internet with the physical, and a formidable scale of deployment in some verticals (Autonomous Vehicles, Smart Cities, Smart Grid).

In the first part of the talk we argue that tackling Ultra Large Scale Systems (ULSS) requires fresh design approaches, and propose Hierarchical Emergent Behavior (HEB), an architectural framework built on the principles of hierarchical organization, and emergent behavior.

We note in particular that key issues with self-driving cars lie not with the design of a single vehicle, but with the interaction of a large number of autonomous vehicles in complex environments. Our intent is to explore new research venues to handle these challenges. In this spirit, the second part of the talk illustrates the potential application of HEB to self-driven cars on the road.
