Starting a company can seem both exciting and daunting.  But you never know what it’s like until you do it.  In this talk, Laura Mather (founder of two companies) will talk about the things she wished she had known before “diving in”.  Topics that will be covered include: how do you know when you are ready, being sure you have the right team, how to define, create, and maintain a corporate culture, among others.



Laura Mather is a Chief Executive Officer, Board Director and Entrepreneur with expertise building global enterprise software companies. She is a renowned expert on cybersecurity, fraud protection and data privacy and has a keen focus on driving digital innovation to foster growth and shareholder value. Laura has deep experience across business strategy, risk management, go-to-market strategy, raising capital and financial management.

Laura founded, grew and sold two enterprise technology companies - Silver Tail Systems, Inc., a cybersecurity firm that provided website protection to global financial institutions and sold to EMC for $250 million, and Talent Sonar, a platform that removed unconscious bias in talent recruitment. At Silver Tail, Laura built the board of directors, hired the CEO, developed the go-to-market strategy and raised $24 million in venture capital. At Talent Sonar, in addition to leading business strategy, Laura raised $10 million and presented to senior executives of Fortune 500 companies, including Nike, Time Warner, Genentech, Intel and eBay, about corporate diversity strategy.

A sought-after speaker on security, privacy, recruiting, diversity and entrepreneurship, Laura is also the recipient of numerous awards and honors for engineering, entrepreneurship and innovation including Forbes’ America’s Top 50 Women in Technology, Agenda Magazine’s Top 50 Potential Board Members, Fast Company’s Most Creative People in Business,Business Insider’s 25 Most Powerful Engineers, Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Entrepreneurs and Anita Borg Institute’s Technical Entrepreneur of the Year. 

Laura holds a Ph.D. and Master of Science in Computer Science and a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics all from the University of Colorado Boulder. She also completed the Executive Program for Scientists & Engineers at the University of California San Diego.
