Abstract:  With the rising use of autonomous agents, teams of agents may need to cooperate while having little or no information regarding the capabilities of their peers. In these ad hoc settings, agents must collaborate on the fly, having no prior opportunity to practice or learn successful joint strategies. Communicating individual agent policy information, then, can serve as a mechanism of explicit coordination, though optimal communication policies are often intractable to compute. However, characteristics of the communicative decision problem permit heuristic solutions, allowing for practical application of this capacity in ad hoc teams.
