Abstract:  Software can support creativity. Professional tools like Maya or Garageband help dedicated users create precise works with great control. This dissertation, however, explores systems (digital and otherwise) which are built to assist casual users's creative activity. This dissertation defines "casual creators" as a label for these systems, and explores the unique set of properties and design patterns that arise from exchanging total creative control for emergent, generative power.
