Kimberly Hieftje, PhD, is a research scientist and founder/director of the play4REAL XR Lab at the Yale School of Medicine, which focuses on the development, evaluation, and implementation of game-based health interventions and interventions using XR (virtual, augmented, and mixed reality) technology. For the past twelve years, Dr. Hieftje has taken the role of principal investigator and co-investigator on several NIH, non-profit, and industry-funded game intervention projects for youth and young adults focused on topics including e-cigarette, tobacco, and marijuana use prevention, risk reduction in minority youth, HIV/STI prevention, HIV/STI testing and counseling within school-based health clinics, empowering Black girls to make healthy decisions regarding their sexual health, alcohol use prevention and harm reduction, sexual assault prevention, and LGBTQ bullying. Dr. Hieftje is a third-year K12 Scholar in the Yale Scholars in Implementation Science program (YSIS) at the Yale School of Medicine/Department of Emergency Medicine. Funded by NHLBI, the program is designed to train early investigators in implementation science. As a scholar, Dr. Hieftje’s research has focused on better understanding the factors associated with successful implementation of game-based health interventions in schools, community programs, and clinic-based settings. Dr. Hieftje is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Games for Health Journal, the premier journal in the field of serious games for health.
