Abstract In this talk, I will discuss the problem of feedback stabilization and control of thermal fluid flows subject to buoyancy forces. In particular, I will present recent results on stabilization of steady-state solutions to the Boussinesq equations in two-dimensional spatial domains. I will show that the feedback control law based on a reduced-order observer can locally stabilize the nonlinear system of Navier-Stokes equations compled with the convection-diffusion equation for the temperature. I will also address the sensor placement problem and the design of the observer. Numerical examples and applications will be provided and discussed.


Short Bio Weiwei Hu is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Oklahoma State University. She obtained her Ph.D. in Mathematics from Virginia Tech, Blacksburg (2012). Her research interests include mathematical control theory of partial differential equations, optimal control of transport and mixing via fluid flows, computational methods for optimal control design, and model reduction.
