Welcome to the UCSC Department of Computer Engineering!

We pursue research in four main areas: computer system design (computer architecture, design automation, low-power memory design), computer networks (network science, wireless networks and the Internet), robotics and control (autonomous vehicles, biomolecular control), and sensing and interaction (computer vision, human-computer interaction, assistive and rehabilitative technology).   With these research strengths our faculty and students are creating, developing and applying technologies which are key components of the Internet of Things (IoT), mobile and pervasive computing, and cyber physical systems.

Our department, established in 1984, is home to the BS, MS, and PhD programs in Computer Engineering (CE); a BS program in Robotics Engineering (RE); a BA program in Network and Digital Technology (BANDT); and a combined BS/MS CE program. CE also co-sponsors the BS program in Bioengineering in its continuing role of incubator and innovator of new programs.

We have an amazing group of faculty, students, and researchers.  Our faculty include AAAS, ACM, MAS  and IEEE Fellows. Our faculty and graduate students regularly receive best paper awards. Our research is funded by NSF, NASA, NIH, DARPA, ARO, ONR, NRL, NRC, DoT, Cisco… to name a few funding sources. Many of our undergraduate students work in our research labs and then go onto graduate school (UCLA, MIT, Stanford, …) or take positions at Google, Cisco, Xilinx, Altera, Intel, GE, Plantronics and many other companies in the Silicon Valley and Santa Cruz. But most of all, we take pride in the several campus and school teaching awards earned by our instructors and teaching assistants.

Our department emphasizes community, and we have helped undergraduate and graduate students create new groups and revitalize old ones.  We have launched three Baskin School groups, including the graduate student group CEG and our undergraduate chapter of Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society, and the Society of Women Engineers. Computer engineering faculty and students take active roles in all Baskin School organizations. If you would like to start a new organization or see a new need, please let us know how to help!

Thank you for visiting our department of computer engineering at the Baskin School!  Please do not hesitate to contact undergraduate advising, graduate advising, and me directly with any questions
