Applied Mathematics

Applied mathematics is a discipline devoted to the use of mathematical methods and reasoning to solve real-world problems of a scientific or decision-making nature in a wide variety of subjects, principally (but not exclusively) in engineering, medicine, the physical and biological sciences, and the social sciences. Applied mathematical modeling often involves the use of systems of ordinary or partial differential equations to describe and predict the behavior of complex real-world systems that unfold dynamically in time.

  • April, 2020: Prof. Daniele Venturi was awarded a research grant from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) to study high-dimensional nonlinear PDEs with numerical tensor methods.  
  • February, 2020: Prof. Marcella Gomez was awarded a research grant from the Defense Advaced Research Project Agency (DARPA) to develop data-driven wound healing models and control algorithms (article).
  • October, 2019: The Applied Mathematics department launches a new program to train the next generation of Scholars in Applied Mathematics (SAM) (website). The program is led by Prof. Pascale Garaud and it is funded by NSF.
  • September, 2019: Prof. Pascale Garaud has been elected Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) in recognition of her exceptional contributions to physics (article).
  • August, 2019: Prof. Dongwook Lee was awarded a research grant from the National Science Fundation (NSF) to study new shock-capturing numerical methods using Gaussian Process Modeling for extreme-scale ready astrophysical and laboratory turbulence problems.
  • August, 2019: AM graduate student Bethany Johnson was awarded the prestigious NOAA fellowship (article).
  • May, 2019: The Department of Applied Mathematics at UCSC hosted the Fifth Bay Area Optimization Meeting. The meeting, supported by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR),  brought together the leading experts in optimization, variational analysis, and applications form both academia and industry (Website). 
  • December, 2018: Prof. Marc Mangel, distinguished research professor of Applied Mathematics  in the Baskin School of Engineering at UC Santa Cruz, has been chosen to receive the Outstanding Achievement Award of the American Institute of Fishery Research Biologists (AIFRB) (article).
  • June, 2018:  Prof. Daniele Venturi was awarded a research grant from the U.S. Army Research Office to study functional differential equations (article).
  • April, 2018: Prof. Marc Mangel, distinguished research professor of applied mathematics and statistics in the Baskin School of Engineering at UC Santa Cruz, has been elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the nation's oldest and most prestigious honorary societies (article).
