Research
Very briefly, my research focuses on the design and evaluation of interactive systems that help people with special needs, including older persons and people with disabilities, and more recently children. Details of my publications and funded grants are in the Research page.
Teaching
At the moment, I am teaching a graduate course called Human Factors. Details of this course and the teaching-related awards I received (while at the University of Manchester) are in the Teaching page.
Scholarly Activities
I lumped together my involvement in panels, the talks and keynote speeches I was invited to, and other research community activities in the Scholarly Activities page.
Information for prospective graduate students
Finally, my core research interests are listed under the page aptly named For research students. I also list the work the PhD candidates (some had graduated) I worked with as examples of the sort of things I am interested in. Because I was in the UK, MSc projects are slightly differently structured and it would be too much to list the 50+ something MSc projects I supervised.
Highlights in 2007
- January: Murni Mahmud, the PhD candidate under my supervision gained her PhD, she also won the third place in the 2006 ACM ASSETS Student Research Competition
- January: Two edited books are out: Human Computer Interaction Research in Web Design and Evaluation and Advances in Universal Web Design and Evaluation: Research, Trends and Opportunities
- April: Adam Sporka, Susumu Harada and I ran (what we think was) quite a successful Workshop at CHI'07 called "Striking a c[h]ord: vocal interaction in assistive technologies, games, and more". A special issue of UAIS journal as a follow up of this workshop is in the making (the papers are currently being reviewed)
- June: The first issue of SIGACCESS Newsletter that I edited is out
- July: Khalid Al-Quradaghi, the PhD candidate under my supervision, and Federico Gaspari that I helped supervise during his supervisor's sabbatical leave, gained their PhD degrees
- October: The ASSETS 2007 Doctoral Consortium that I chaired with Clayton Lewis hosted 10 excellent student presentations and lively discussions
