I had departed Apple Valley solo after two days waiting for gusty weather to subside. Halfway through the trip I had tired of applying right rudder to correct for the C-152 "ground adjustable rudder tab." I carefully moved over to the right seat to change the lateral balance and the plane flew perfectly straight. I decided to land in the right seat as well, although I had only 100 hours total time and no right seat time. On landing, I did not compensate for crosswind or my new right seat view, and landed hard in a crab. The rudders and nosewheel were sluggish and I almost ran off the runway. After shutdown I found the nose strut totally deflated. In the gusty dirty winds of Apple Valley, the strut had banged up and down for two days and filled with grit around the strut seal. This explained the sluggishness on landing and taxi. Now I wipe the strut clean before and after each flight. I also have practiced right seat flying with a CFI to coach my landings.
