Common Errors made by CFIs 1. Brief your students just like passengers the first time you fly with them, including seat belts, door opening/closing, and BARF BAGS! Keep the first flight very short. 2. Endorsements include signature, instructor number, and expiration. Your instructor number MUST have "CFI" on the end. 3. Rehearse simulated emergencies with every student BEFORE doing them in flight. 4. Give at least SOME IFR training before solo. 5. Private initial applicants need three SOLO towered landings. 6. Student pilot licenses only last 2 years, even though the medical may be valid for three years. 7. When recommending someone for the practical test, they MUST have logbook endorsements for: training on areas missed on the written test, training within 60 days of the practical test, and for spins/hi-performance/complex/tailwheel if required. 8. When endorsing pilots for high-performance or complex, you must log flight AND GROUND training. 9. The cross-country time while dual given for an initial pilot rating is NOT PIC time. Don't use it for the 50 hours PIC cross-country for the instrument rating. 10. If an applicant for CFI fails spins, they have to bring a SPINNABLE airplane for the retest.
