Student Organizations
The Academic Excellence Program (ACE)
has a goal of increasing the diversity of students in science and
engineering. Many of our classes have separate ACE sections to provide
intensive tutoring for students who meet certain criteria having to
to do with economic disadvantage or by being the first member of their
family to attend college.
The Multicultural Engineering Paricipation Program
(MEP) seeks to increase
the diversity of engineering students. They have many
events open to all students, and
they also have drop in tutoring services available to all students.
The UCSC
student chapter of the IEEE has many activities and subgroups
to help young engineers. The popular SOE Cyberslug visible
at the top of this page was originally created to help fundraising
for the UCSC student chapter of the IEEE.
The UCSC
student chapter of the ACM provides social and academic support
opportunities for students
in computing disciplines.
The Society for Women Engineers
(SWE)
has both male and female engineers as members and they
have organized many review sessions for SOE students.
The UCSC chapter of the National Society for Black Engineers
(SBE) provides support
for aspiring engineers of color.
The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers
(SHPE) say in their mission
statement that they are brought together by heritage, social
responsibility, and a desire to improve the quality of all people
through the use of science and technology.
The UCSC Linux Users Group
(SLUGLUG)
provides free assistance to any students who would like to have
open software unix systems on their personal PCs or macintoshes.
Their "Installfest"s have been popular and lively events.
The Queer Geeks organization
provides support for people of varying sexual identification and
those who support them.
