Darrell D. E. Long
Kumar Malavalli Professor
Dr. Darrell D. E. Long is Professor of Computer Science and Kumar Malavalli Endowed Professor of Storage Systems Research at the University of California, Santa Cruz, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies and Director of the Storage Systems Research Center in the Jack Baskin School of Engineering.
He received his B.S. degree in Computer Science from San Diego State University in 1984, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of California, San Diego in 1986 and 1988 respectively. His advisor was Prof. Jehan-François Pâris.
He has broad research interests in the area of computing systems including high performance storage systems, operating systems, distributed systems,  fault tolerance and reliability, performance evaluation and mobile computing. His research is supported by the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, the Naval Research Laboratory, the Department of Energy Defense Program Laboratories (Lawrence Livermore, Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories), the Department of Energy Office of Science, the Usenix Association, OnStor, Veritas Software, Symantec, Microsoft Research, Hewlett-Packard Laboratories, Overland Storage, Network Appliance, LSI Logic and by International Business Machines Corporation (IBM). He was the recipient of an IBM Faculty Award in 2003.
He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and  a member of the Computer Society, and at one time served as Chair of the Technical Committee on Operating Systems, where he now serves on the Executive Committee. He is a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and the Usenix Association, where he served as the Chair of the Scholars Committee.
Prof. Long served as the Chair of the University of California Committee on Research Policy during 2002–2003, and as the Vice Chair during 2001–2002. At the same time he served on the University of California President’s Council on the National Laboratories, the Science and Technology Panel, and the National Security Panel. He continues on the National Security Panel and the Intelligence Panel after stepping down as Chair of the Committee on Research Policy.
He recently served the campus as an elected member of the Committee on Committees (2003–2004), and as the Chair of the Building Committee for the Engineering II building. He has served on the Committee on Rules, Jurisdiction and Elections, and on the Committee on Research. He serves in various capacities in the Jack Baskin School of Engineering and the Department of Computer Science.
He currently serves on a National Academy of Sciences Standing Committee on Technology Insight-Gauge, Evaluate and Review (TIGER) for the National Research Council. He has served on numerous committees and panels for the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense and various government agencies.
