Knowledge Services & Enterprise Management (KSEM) Certificate Program

XSC211 E-Business Technology and Strategy (5 units)

This course surveys the structure of modern information technology, the relationship of that structure to the structure of the industry that creates it, and the economic forces that drive the players in the industry. Building on these technological and economic concepts, we study how firms can craft a technology and business strategy that creates and captures value in the IT product and/or services sectors. Topics include the economics of information, strategies for information products and services, and a survey of e-commerce.

Instruction: John Musacchio, Assistant Professor of Technology and Information Management, UCSC
Mondays, 6:00PM to 9:30PM
Mar 31, 2008 to Jun 2, 2008
Tuition: $855 through March 18, $950.00 thereafter (no meeting May 26)
Registration number 20325.

XSC260 Information Retrieval (5 units)

This course covers major topics of information retrieval, including statistical characteristics of text, several important retrieval models, text clustering, text classification, text filtering, Web analysis, information extraction, peer-to-peer research, distributed search, personalized search and other related topics. This course is beneficial to students who want to do research in information retrieval or text mining.

Instruction: Yi Zhang, Assistant Professor of Technology and Information Management, UCSC
Tuesdays & Thursdays, 6:00PM to 7:45PM
Apr 1 2008 to Jun 5, 2008
Tuition: $855 through March 18, $950.00 thereafter. Registration number 20326.

XSC251 Information Systems & Technology

This course introduces a systematic methodology and corresponding set of methods and analytical tools in stochastic and neurodynamic programming used for business intelligence in corporate enterprises and A1 and machine learning research and applications in computer science, computer engineering, and electrical engineering. Topics include dynamic programming; neural network architecture and training, stochastic iterative algorithms; and the use of information systems to integrate the management, planning, execution and monitoring of the technology development process. The course is of interest to those who specialize in the development, management, and commercialization of technology and business operations.

Prerequisites:
"Mathematical Methods of Systems/Analysis: Stochastic," or "Applied Mathematics and Statistics," or permission of the instructor. Students should have a solid background in probability equivalent to statistics, stochastic methods, calculus, mathematical maturity, stochastic processes and optimization, business intelligence and algorithms.
