About Technology and Information Management
Students in TIM will work on innovative projects with a major impact on industry development. We have several proposed research thrusts in areas such as management of high-tech including information technology, new product development , network management , stochastic optimization in enterprise management, financial engineering, knowledge management, e-business, supply chain management, multi-agent systems, mechanism design, data warehousing and data mining, and decision support systems.
In addition to the UC campus at Santa Cruz , which is considered one of the most beautiful in the US , we are developing a Silicon Valley Center at the NASA University Research Park located in the heart of Silicon Valley to facilitate industrial interactions. There are several major corporations now partnering with us at strategic levels, and our own faculty strength will be augmented in research and teaching by talented researchers from leading organizations such as IBM and NASA.
Our vision is to integrate business and management analytics with technology and information systems modeling, to guide networked enterprise decision making. A related thrust area of key interest to Silicon Valley , is systems-level product and process development and innovation, based on risk and financial management.
The need for an enterprise to respond to rapidly changing markets requires managers, executives, and engineers, who have an understanding of technologies along with analytical skills that enable them to develop theoretically sophisticated, and practically viable solutions. Therefore, many of our research projects combine the tight integration of technology and business to solve complex interdisciplinary problems in the management, development and commercialization of technology.
Successful executives and managers will be those who can exploit opportunities and resources and employ risk management approaches, enabled by information technologies, in designing product portfolios and achieving rapid and effective product design and delivery. We anticipate that many of the graduates of the program will be able to develop and manage sophisticated Business Intelligence platforms and systems that drive enterprises. Doctoral students will develop theory fusing sophisticated stochastic optimization management analytics with advanced knowledge management methods, based on industry interactions.
This program will be of most interest to students with a strong technical background, most likely an engineering degree with a high GPA. Interested students should also have an interest in the management and systems-level approach to technology.
