Please note that our drop-in advising hours are 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm Monday-Thursday in BE 225. 2 :: Declare your SoE major! Our Declaration of Major process has changed! Please read all of the instructions before declaring. Declarations to the Major for Fall Quarter 2007 are due to the SoE Undergraduate Advising Counter (BE 225) no later than 3:30pm on Thursday, October 25th. We advise you to start this process ASAP as it can take up to 2-3 weeks to complete. If you have questions, please feel free to email advising at soe.ucsc.edu, or stop by drop-in 1:30-3:30pm Monday through Thursday. 3 :: CS109 schedule changed to NEW QUARTER CS109 will be offered in Winter 08 instead of the previously published date of Spring 08. The class will meet Tu/Th 10-11:45. This time slot conflicts with CS115 and CE107. If you had planned to take CS109 this year in the spring and this schedule change presents a problem for you, please contact the advising office (advising at soe.ucsc.edu), your advisor, or the instructor (charlie at cs.ucsc.edu) as soon as possible and no later than October 5 to arrange a new schedule. If necessary, special accommodations may be arranged for students that notify us of conflicts before October 5, 2007. 4 :: Changes to 07-08 Course Schedule In addition to CS 109, please note that other courses have changed the quarter that they are offered in the 07-08 academic year. Please refer to the 07-08 Course Schedule for more information. 5 :: Course announcement: CE 108 - Data Compression What is the technology behind MP3, JPEG and MPEG? How does ZIP file compression work? How can you encode audio using only 1-bit modulation? You'll find this and much more in... CE 108 - Data Compression - Fall 07 Instructor: R. Manduchi CE 108 introduces the theory and practice of compression algorithms for different types of data and application requirements. We'll cover both lossless compression (Huffman, arithmetic and dictionary coding) and lossy coding (PCM, DPCM, delta modulation, transform coding). Class projects will demonstrate the use of different techniques for the compression of biological time series, multimedia, and possibly DNA sequences. This position requires the applicant to have taken this course or it's equivalent, and done well. It is estimated that the total hours needed in this position will be 5 hours per week. Please contact Professor Friedlander directly via email at friedlan at ee.ucsc.edu for more information. 8 :: Looking for Tutors and MSI Learning Assistants in Engineering: This is a paid position the rate are $11.93 per hour for individual and $16.05 per hour is the group rate (both position include both rates depending on what you are doing). We are currently looking for people interested in working in the MSI program for Fall 2006 (CE 16). Some of the responsibilities include: 1. Attend all lectures for the class you are working in 2. Participate in a 3-unit training class. 3. Facilitate MSI sessions. 4. Be available to work between 8-10 hours per week. We are currently also looking for Tutors in CE 1, 3, 12, 16, 80N, CS 2, 10, 111 and Applied Mathematics and Statistics 3. We are looking for students who have taken and done well in these classes (you need to have received a B or better in the specific class you would like to work with) and are currently in Good Academic Standing. There is 3-unit tutor/MSI training course that all MSI Learning Assistants and Tutors must take. It meets Saturday October 6th, October 20th, and November 3rd from 9-4 PM and Friday November 16th from 5-8:30 PM. This position requires a large time commitment. You MUST be available for all aspects of the position.
