Eligibility: The student/team must be a UCSC undergraduate student(s) (permanent resident or US Citizen) planning to undertake the project during Summer 2007. Homework assignments, a comprehensive team project, a midterm, and a final examination will be used to develop understanding and mastery of the course content. Manduchi How does ZIP file compression work? What is the basic technology used by MP-3, JPEG and MPEG? You'll find this and much more in CE 108. CE 108 introduces the theory and practice of compression algorithms for different types of data and application requirements. We'll cover both lossless compression (Huffman, arithmetic and dictionary coding) and lossy coding (PCM, DPCM, delta modulation, transform coding). Class projects will demonstrate the use of different techniques for the compression of biological time series, multimedia, and DNA sequences. Students who have taken CMPS 160/161 (Graphics/Visualization), CMPS 183 (hypertext), and CMPS 180 (Databases) class with good performance are likely to be good candidates for this position. Having taken these courses is not required, but is a plus. Residency Requirements Students must be available on a regular basis for meeting/communication at UCSC. Duration June 15 -- September 15 (or part of it). Funds Total number of hours available is approximately 250 hours. Stipend Total stipend is approximately $3000.
