"Startup"). The lectures will focus on four important aspects of the start-up process: developing a product concept, creating a marketing plan, develoing a financial plan, and creating a business plan. Homework assignments, a comprehensive team project, a midterm, and a final examination will be used to develop understanding and mastery of the course content. Case studies and occasional presentations from guest speakers will be used to illustrate and augment the material developed in the course. For more instruction contact the instructor, Subhas Desa (sdesa at soe.ucsc.edu) This course is also currently being taught (Spring 2007) on Tuesday, Thursday, from 12- 1:45 PM in Phy Sci 114, and interested students are welcome to attend the lectures, meet the instructor, and learn more about the course. 10 :: New Course: AMS 132 Statistical Inference This fall, we are offering AMS 132, a new course designed to be the "learning from data" complement of AMS 131/CE 107. Those tools of probability theory are applied to inference problems, where we attempt to learn from noisy data. Topics include point estimation, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, and linear regression. The pre-requisite is AMS 131 or CE 107. This course replaces AMS 162 in the statistics minor, and serves as an excellent preparation for AMS 206. This course is also currently under consideration for approval as an elective for several of the engineering majors (please check back with the advising office later). 11 :: CE 108 - Data Compression CE 108 - Data Compression - Fall 07 Instructor: R. Manduchi How does ZIP file compression work? What is the basic technology used by MP-3, JPEG and MPEG? You'll find this and much more in... CE 108 introduces the theory and practice of compression algorithms for different types of data and application requirements. We'll cover both lossless compression (Huffman, arithmetic and dictionary coding) and lossy coding (PCM, DPCM, delta modulation, transform coding). Class projects will demonstrate the use of different techniques for the compression of biological time series, multimedia, and DNA sequences. Prerequisites: (CE 107 or MATH 131A) and (CS 101) 12 :: SoE Graduation Ceremony Information!
