1 :: CELEBRATE NATIONAL ENGINEERS WEEK
National Engineers Week (N.E.W.) is February 18-24, 2007
To coincide with National Engineers Week, BSoE student organizations
will be hosting information and membership recruitment tables
throughout the week from Tuesday, February 19 through Friday, February
23, in the main lobby entrance of the Baskin Engineering Bldg, first
floor. This is an opportunity to purchase a BSoE CyberSlug shirt if you
don't already have one. Come meet the BSoE student organizations, help
boost their membership, and support their fund-raising activities!
Women in Engineering (eWomen)
February 21, Wednesday 1-3 pm
The Women in Engineering (eWomen) graduate student association is
organized to support and encourage women graduate students in
engineering. eWomen provides: an open forum for discussion of issues,
supportive peer environment, faculty support, and liaison with
Department Chairs and Dean to communicate about problems that would
benefit from changes in policy.
Information Systems Management Association (ISMA)
February 19-23, Tuesday-Friday 2-4 pm
The ISMA is dedicated to the support and academic success of students
majoring in the ISM program and seeks to provide a community for ISM
and affiliated majors.
Undergraduate Hardware Lab BBQ
February 23, Friday 11am-3pm
The Undergraduate Hardware Lab will be hosting a BBQ on the E2
Courtyard from 11am-3pm on Friday, February 23rd with proceeds going
towards equipment for the new Undergraduate Hardware Lab. The lab will
provide all students of engineering at UC Santa Cruz with the
facilities and the tools to develop their own projects outside of
classes.

Learning to manage your time is essential for all students and peer
mentors can help offer tips to teach you how. Peer Mentors are
available at the BSoE Undergraduate Student Affairs Office to talk with
students during drop-in hours: 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. and 1:30 P.M. to
3:30 P.M., Monday through Friday. Peer mentors also serve as a
resource providing information and answers for BSoE-related questions
which particularly assist new and prospective BSoE students plan toward
their studies. Take the opportunity to stop by the Undergraduate

We will pay you $1500 to write a research paper on a topic relevant to
the Center for Biomolecular Science & Engineering. Explore a cutting
edge topic while working with a faculty member. This award opportunity
is for underrepresented UCSC students in any department. Contact

information. Applications will be accepted through the beginning of
Spring quarter, and projects can be funded as soon as they are

The Division of Physical and Biological Sciences and the Jack Baskin

The Undergraduate Hardware Lab is hosting its weekly BBQ every
Thursday! Come to the E2 courtyard from 11am-3pm if you are hungry for

All profits go towards equipment for the new Undergraduate Hardware
Lab, sponsored by the SOE Honor Society, IEEE, and SWE. This lab will

7 :: ACM "Robocode" Competition - Organizational Meeting - February 8th
Thursday, February 8th
Baskin 330 @ 6pm
The ACM student club is hosting a "Robocode" competition.
The organizational meeting and mini-tutorial is this Thursday, with the
actual competition to be held two weeks later. Robocode is a simulated
tank battle game, where participants write Java code to move their
tank, scan the field, and fire bullets. Only basic Java knowledge is
necessary to control the tanks, so we'd like to encourage everyone to
come join us. If you're busy, grab a friend and work as a team! Go to

The BioINFormatics Free Faculty Student Lunch will be on Tuesday Feb
13, from 12:00-1:30pm, in PSB 305.
Undergrads, grads, postdocs, and faculty are all welcome to get
together for pizza and discussion. We generally don't have formal
research talks at BINFFFSL, but we do talk about opportunities for
joining labs, community events, and so forth.
We're still looking for viable ideas about what to do in the way of
artwork for our "dark well". (The idea of a DNA model out of Darling
model parts does not seem to have quite the right scale.)
We're also still looking for T-shirt ideas.

1 :: CELEBRATE NATIONAL ENGINEERS WEEK
To coincide with National Engineers Week, BSoE student organizations
will be hosting information and membership recruitment tables
throughout the week from Tuesday, February 19 through Friday, February
23, in the main lobby entrance of the Baskin Engineering Bldg, first
floor. This is an opportunity to purchase a BSoE CyberSlug shirt if you
don't already have one. Come meet the BSoE student organizations, help
boost their membership, and support their fund-raising activities!
There will also be daily raffle prize drawings! Guests need not be
present to win. Come join the Baskin School of Engineering community in
promoting engineering education.
Women in Engineering (eWomen)
February 21, Wednesday 1-3 pm
The Women in Engineering (eWomen) graduate student association is
organized to support and encourage women graduate students in
engineering. eWomen provides: an open forum for discussion of issues,
supportive peer environment, faculty support, and liaison with
Department Chairs and Dean to communicate about problems that would
benefit from changes in policy.
"Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day"
As part of National Engineers Week, Thursday, February 22, 2007 is
designated as "Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day". We remind
everyone in the Baskin School of Engineering community that women
engineers also make a world of difference.
Information Systems Management Association (ISMA)
February 19-23, Tuesday-Friday 2-4 pm
The ISMA is dedicated to the support and academic success of students
majoring in the ISM program and seeks to provide a community for ISM
and affiliated majors.
Undergraduate Hardware Lab BBQ
February 23, Friday 11am-3pm
The Undergraduate Hardware Lab will be hosting a BBQ on the E2
Courtyard from 11am-3pm on Friday, February 23rd with proceeds going
towards equipment for the new Undergraduate Hardware Lab. The lab will
provide all students of engineering at UC Santa Cruz with the
facilities and the tools to develop their own projects outside of
classes.

Learning to manage your time is essential for all students and peer
mentors can help offer tips to teach you how. Peer Mentors are
available at the BSoE Undergraduate Student Affairs Office to talk with
students during drop-in hours: 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. and 1:30 P.M. to
3:30 P.M., Monday through Friday. Peer mentors also serve as a
resource providing information and answers for BSoE-related questions

4 :: ISM 158 offered in Spring Quarter
ISM 158: Business Information Strategy will be offered in Spring 2007.
This class considers the role of information in business strategy. In
particular, there is a focus on decisions regarding information
technology and information systems to give a business competitive
advantage over other companies. The course will focus on case studies
to see why some businesses are more successful than others in building
information systems that lead to organizational and individual
efficiencies.
This course satisfies the "W" general education requirement and the
pre-requisites have significantly changed. ISM 50 is now the only
pre-requisite.
5 :: ?Cell/B.E. University Challenge 07?
?Cell/B.E. University Challenge 07? is a programming contest
specifically created for university students and offering cash prizes
to the winners.
The Cell Broadband Engine (?Cell/B.E.?) processor is already recognized
as a workhorse of the gaming industry (e.g., Cell/B.E. processor is the
digital heart of Sony's PlayStation 3,) the ?Cell/B.E. University
Challenge 07? is designed to spur the creative use of the Cell/B.E.
processor in additional areas. From seismic simulators to financial
models, creating development tools to creating business models,
submissions are limited only by the imagination and innovation of the
students.
Winners of the ?Cell/B.E. University Challenge 07,? chosen by a panel
comprising academic and IBM technical experts, will receive prizes with
cash value ranging from $10,000 USD for the first place winner to
$2,500 USD for the fourth place winner. Additional information on

We will pay you $1500 to write a research paper on a topic relevant to
the Center for Biomolecular Science & Engineering. Explore a cutting
edge topic while working with a faculty member. This award opportunity
is for underrepresented UCSC students in any department. Contact

7 :: CITRIS White Paper competition
CITRIS is proud to announce the second annual CITRIS White Paper
competition, which will give away $25K in cash prizes for the best
ideas that demonstrate the ability of IT to address a major societal
challenge. The IT for Society contest is open to students from all four
CITRIS campuses: UC Berkeley, UC Merced, UC Santa Cruz, and UC Davis.

8 :: THE 10th ANNUAL UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH POSTER SYMPOSIUM
The Division of Physical and Biological Sciences and the Jack Baskin

12 :: ACM Robocode competition
Thursday, February 22nd
Baskin 330 @ 6pm
This week is the "shoot-out" for our Robocode competition,
sponsored by the ACM and SWE! Write a small Java bot
(everyone is welcome to participate), or just come to
see what it's about and cheer on the contestants.
Afterwards, we have the ACM's regular Board Game Night
happening, with fun games like "pirate candyland" and

The Google File System (GFS) is a large scale distributed file system
used for internal Google data and as a building block for other Google
storage services. This presentation is a brief, high-level overview of
GFS, and GFS related testing. Included is a discussion of GFS
architecture, features, and a 10,000 foot view of the testing that goes
into GFS. The main goal of this presentation is to provide insight into
the complexity of Google infrastructure, and a few strategies that are

Learn how to combine an interest in Biological Sciences with interests
in Engineering, Applied Math and Statistics, Psychology, Anthropology,
Sociology, Media Arts, Business, Law and Public Policy?
This course is designed for students interested in pursuing careers in
healthcare and the biotechnology industry. The course will focus on
the scientific rationale, development strategy and career specialties
required in the development of drugs produced by recombinant DNA
technology. The course will include case histories of recently
approved drugs for the treatment of cancer, arthritis, and autoimmune
disease as well as the development of vaccines for HIV. The course
will include lectures from Public Health and Biotech Industry
Professionals.
The course will be open to upper division and graduate students who
have a background in basic molecular genetics and cell biology and is
intended for both science majors and non-science majors interested in
health care, discovery research, and applied clinical research.

Description of the course:
ISM 80C provides a project-based introduction to the process, methods,
and tools that are useful in creating a new technology enterprise
(a.k.a. "Startup"). The lectures will focus on four important aspects
of the start-up process: developing a product concept, creating a
marketing plan, developing a financial plan, and creating a business
plan. Homework assignments, a comprehensive team project, a midterm,
and a final examination will be used to develop understanding and
mastery of the course content. Case studies and occasional
presentations from guest speakers will be used to illustrate and
augment the material developed in the course.

Description of the seminar course:
ISM 101 will expose students to the breadth and depth of management of
technology through weekly talks by leading industry practitioners and
university researchers in the fields of technology and business. Topics
covered will include engineering/product design and development,
operations, strategy, microeconomics, finance, and marketing. These
topics will be addressed within the context of high technologies such
as software, information systems, semiconductors, storage and networks,
nanotechnology, and biotechnology.
Industry speakers include executives and managers from technology
companies Cisco, Sun, Microsoft, and Plantronics, while technology
presentations will include fields such as Search Technologies, Computer
Graphics, DataBase Technologies, and Robotics.

8 :: Individual Studies: Web Application Development
Individual Studies: Web Application Development with Paulo Franca,
Lecturer Computer Sciences. 2 credits.
This will be offered to Senior students during the Spring quarter.
Applicants from CE,CS and ISM are welcome.
This will make use of Linux, Apache, PHP, MySQL and Javascript.
Students are NOT required to know all of those, but students need to be
proficient with Linux/Unix, use of databases, familiarity with HTML
and, needless to say, must be good programmers.
Only 4 students can be enrolled in this study group. During the Spring
quarter we will develop a cooperative project (this means that you will
have your own project, but it will have to interact with others).
Students will be required to be present in bi-weekly meetings during
the quarter.

11 :: CITRIS White Paper competition
CITRIS is proud to announce the second annual CITRIS White Paper
competition, which will give away $25K in cash prizes for the best
ideas that demonstrate the ability of IT to address a major societal
challenge. The IT for Society contest is open to students from all four
CITRIS campuses: UC Berkeley, UC Merced, UC Santa Cruz, and UC Davis.

12 :: THE 10th ANNUAL UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH POSTER SYMPOSIUM

13 :: BBQ on the E2 Courtyard
The Undergraduate Hardware Lab is hosting its weekly BBQ every
Thursday! Come to the E2 courtyard from 11am-3pm if you are hungry for
hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, polish dogs, or garden burgers.
All profits go towards equipment for the new Undergraduate Hardware
Lab, sponsored by the SOE Honor Society, IEEE, and SWE. This lab will
provide all students of engineering at UC Santa Cruz with the
facilities and the tools to develop their own projects outside of

Altera Corporation, a leading provider in programmable logic
solutions,will be hosting their Information Session on the 5th floor of

The Google File System (GFS) is a large scale distributed file system
used for internal Google data and as a building block for other Google
storage services. This presentation is a brief, high-level overview of
GFS, and GFS related testing. Included is a discussion of GFS
architecture, features, and a 10,000 foot view of the testing that goes
into GFS. The main goal of this presentation is to provide insight into
the complexity of Google infrastructure, and a few strategies that are

Dr. Terran Brown is a Psychometrician with the Educational Testing
Service. He will speak about careers in Psychometrics, graduate
internships, and fellowships at the ETS. Psychometricians develop,
administer, and score tests and exams. They use mathematical techniques
such as factor analysis, multidimensional scaling, and data clustering
to evaluate the large sets of data from tests.
