Students who do not pass the exam can take another exam in class one week later. Students who do not pass the second intake exam may be dropped from the class. The intake exam for CE 110 will cover LC3 assembly, binary numbers (hex, octal, two's compl. sign/mag. etc), basic boolean logic, and basic logic gates. Students from other schools who didn't take CE 12 here are welcome to talk to the instructor. 4 :: Engineering Courses Offered in Summer 2007 The following is a tentative list of SoE courses to be offered in Summer 2007: AMS 005 AMS 007 CMPE 016 CMPE 185 CMPS 12A/L CMPS 12B/M CMPS 101 ISM 80C A complete list of tentative Summer course offerings (including ECON, MATH, and PHYS) can be found at: 5 :: Deans' & Chancellor's Undergraduate Awards DEANS' UNDERGRADUATE AWARDS Fifty undergraduate students, up to ten from each of the five academic divisions, will receive the Dean?s Award (certificate and $100). Recipients will be considered for the Chancellor?s Award. CHANCELLOR'S UNDERGRADUATE AWARDS At least two students from each of the divisions will also receive the additional Chancellor?s Award. Recipients will be considered for the Steck Award. STECK AWARD In recognition of the most outstanding completed senior thesis/research project, one graduating senior will be selected as the recipient of the Steck Award. The student will receive $1,000 and a certificate. In addition, his or her senior thesis/research project will be bound and copies given to the student, the research supervisor, McHenry Library, and the Steck family, whose generous contributions have made this award possible. Through these awards, the Deans and Chancellor wish to encourage and stimulate outstanding scholarship and creativity among undergraduate students, based on work developed in courses or programs in the normal pattern of academic activity at UCSC. A thesis or project completed in a previous academic year (e.g., finished in spring 2006) may be submitted for consideration unless it was submitted and won an award in a previous year's competition. Winners will be honored at an awards ceremony on June 8, which will culminate our eighth annual Student Achievement Week. The names of the winners will also be announced at graduation. GUIDELINES Submit completed projects and application forms no later than *Friday, April 13, 2007*, to the Department/Committee/Program office in which the project was done. SoE undergraduates should submit their projects and applications to Virginia Carrillo, BE 221. Application forms are available from the offices of the Chancellor, Divisions, Departments, and Colleges. - All submissions must be accompanied with the application. - All submissions must include one supporting statement by the faculty sponsor. - Foreign language projects must be accompanied by appropriate translation. - Technical papers must be accompanied by an abstract in non-technical language. - All other submissions must be accompanied by a one page narrative description. - Musical works must be accompanied by a recording of a performance of the work. - Visual art works must be accompanied by one or more slides or photographs of the work, in addition to the work itself (if portable). - Performing art works may be accompanied by a video recording of a performance of the work, but such recordings are not required. - Previous award winners are eligible only for projects in a completely different area. This class considers the role of information in business strategy. In particular, there is a focus on decisions regarding information technology and information systems to give a business competitive advantage over other companies. The course will focus on case studies to see why some businesses are more successful than others in building information systems that lead to organizational and individual efficiencies. This course satisfies the "W" general education requirement and the pre-requisites have significantly changed. ISM 50 and completion of the ?C? A list of peer mentors and their drop-in hours is posted outside the BSoE Undergraduate Student Affairs Office. 5 :: Deans' & Chancellor's Undergraduate Awards : DEADLINE THIS FRIDAY DEANS' UNDERGRADUATE AWARDS: Fifty undergraduate students, up to ten from each of the five academic divisions, will receive the Dean's Award (certificate and $100). Recipients will be considered for the Chancellor's Award. CHANCELLOR'S UNDERGRADUATE AWARDS: At least two students from each of the divisions will also receive the additional Chancellor's Award. Recipients will be considered for the Steck Award. STECK AWARD In recognition of the most outstanding completed senior thesis/research project, one graduating senior will be selected as the recipient of the Steck Award. The student will receive $1,000 and a certificate. In addition, his or her senior thesis/research project will be bound and copies given to the student, the research supervisor, McHenry Library, and the Steck family, whose generous contributions have made this award possible. Through these awards, the Deans and Chancellor wish to encourage and stimulate outstanding scholarship and creativity among undergraduate students, based on work developed in courses or programs in the normal pattern of academic activity at UCSC. A thesis or project completed in a previous academic year (e.g., finished in spring 2006) may be submitted for consideration unless it was submitted and won an award in a previous year's competition. Winners will be honored at an awards ceremony on June 8, which will culminate our eighth annual Student Achievement Week. The names of the winners will also be announced at graduation. GUIDELINES Submit completed projects and application forms no later than *Friday, April 13, 2007*, to the Department/Committee/Program office in which the project was done. SoE undergraduates should submit their projects and applications to Virginia Carrillo, BE 221. Application forms are available from the offices of the Chancellor, Divisions, Departments, and Colleges. - All submissions must be accompanied with the application. - All submissions must include one supporting statement by the faculty sponsor. - Foreign language projects must be accompanied by appropriate translation. - Technical papers must be accompanied by an abstract in non-technical language. - All other submissions must be accompanied by a one page narrative description. - Musical works must be accompanied by a recording of a performance of the work. - Visual art works must be accompanied by one or more slides or photographs of the work, in addition to the work itself (if portable). - Performing art works may be accompanied by a video recording of a performance of the work, but such recordings are not required. - Previous award winners are eligible only for projects in a completely different area. Eligibility: Any undergraduate senior majoring in a BA/BS degree program of the Jack Baskin School of Engineering (BENG, BINF, CMPE, CMPS, EE, ISM) who will graduate or has graduated during the 2006-2007 academic year is eligible. Entry: Students submit a personal written statement that describes any evidence of qualification beyond that found in a student's academic transcript, including documentation of noteworthy projects or unusual accomplishments, and at least one letter of reference from BSoE faculty. Deadline: Statements and supporting materials must be submitted to BSoE Undergraduate Student Affairs (JBE 225), c/o Virginia Carrillo by 12:00 Noon, Tuesday, May 1, 2007. This annual prize honors the memory and the legacy of its namesake--David A. Huffman, Computer Science Professor Emeritus. A recipient is selected by a panel of faculty judges from the School of Engineering. This class considers the role of information in business strategy. In particular, there is a focus on decisions regarding information technology and information systems to give a business competitive advantage over other companies. The course will focus on case studies to see why some businesses are more successful than others in building information systems that lead to organizational and individual efficiencies. This course satisfies the "W" general education requirement and the pre-requisites have significantly changed. The incumbent will be active in generating content for NASA CoLab in Second Life as well as be an active member in the volunteer community. The program will be conducted at an NSF supported REU Site in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). The student participants will investigate problems related to information extraction, model learning, and decision making, in sensor-rich environments for safety and security. These projects will be performed in the larger context of a multi-disciplinary research project, performed under the umbrella of IRIS and MavHome, aimed at designing control software, as well as hardware resources in an intelligent, sensor-rich environment in order to provide valuable services to the inhabitants and to predict and address threats, to provide support for security, to augment the infrastructure, and for environmental protection. The research will be performed under the supervision of a UTA faculty member and in collaboration with a number of graduate students. Program Scope and Application Procedures: This REU program consists of a 10-week Summer session, from June 4 to August 9, 2007 and is open to computer science and computer engineering majors (or those in a closely related field) who are going to be a sophomore, junior, or senior during the 2007-08 academic year.
