hi Xiaolan,

Thanks for your kind words! We have substantially improved the usability and security of our custom track feature over the years. Although our custom track data are generally secure and are not made available to other users, we can't absolutely guarantee that your data are secure if you view custom tracks on our publicly accessible browser. Several pharmaceutical and biotech companies with the same concern have opted to obtain a Genome Browser license that entitles them to set up a private installation of the Genome Browser on an internal server. You may want to consider this for your research division as well. You can find licensing information at http://genome.ucsc.edu/license/. I would also be happy to answer any additional questions you have about this.

  Subject: Customer Track Security

  Dear UCSC genome browser people,

Thanks for your hard work for making the browser such a great tool!

I have some questions in regards to the security issues for the custom tracks.

  1. Even if I did not share the data with public domain and deleted afterwards, is there any security concerns that I should know to keep the

  proprietary information?

  2. Do you happen to know how other companies are dealing with the situations?

  Thanks and best regards,
