Yes Martin, you can download directly the mysql data files.
Either via rsync (recommended) with something like:
	 rsync -navz --progress rsync://hgdownload.cse.ucsc.edu/mysql/ce2/
for example to list all the files in the ce2 database.

Or via ftp/wget from this directory hierarchy:
	ftp://hgdownload.cse.ucsc.edu/mysql/
