Hi Alissa,
The fasta files carry the original time stamps as NCBI prepared them.
The data went through some initial testing period before NCBI notified
us that the data are officially released.
The Feb 2006 time stamp is the time when we built the base geneome database
after the official release.
Fan.

Subject: [Genome] Are all timestamps kept up to date?
Hi there,
I want to make sure that the hg18 chromosome fasta files are the same
version as the hg18-mm8 pairwise alignments, but I've noticed a
discrepancy with your timestamps:
If you go to ftp://hgdownload.cse.ucsc.edu/goldenPath/hg18,
The timestamp for the /chromosomes directory is Feb 3 2006,
However, if you actually open the /chromosome directory, the fasta files
for each chromosome have a timestamp of Dec 9 2005.
Shouldn't the timestamps be identical for the directory and the files
within that directory?
Thank you in advance,
-Alissa
