On Scaling Laws for Ad Hoc Wireless Networks

Abstract:
Recent years have seen the emergence of ad hoc wireless networks and sensor networks with promising applications. In the near future, ad hoc wireless networks may make communication ubiquitous, mesh networks may connect neighborhoods, and sensor networks may sense and interact with the environment. Due to the complex nature of these networks, there have been great interests and nice results in understanding their fundamental performance limits since the ground-breaking work by Gupta and Kumar. The core question under consideration is the maximum bit/second or bit*meter/second a network of n nodes can provide. In this talk, I will first present the techniques and results on the transport capacity of ad hoc wireless networks under the disk-model. Then I will talk about scaling laws with an information theoretic formulation. This includes the results for without fading, our results for with fading, and results on dense networks with fast fading, all in certain path-loss attenuation regimes. Finally, modeling issues, mobility models and future work will be briefly discussed.

Biography:
Feng Xue received the B.S. degree from Shandong University, China, and the M.S. degree from the Institute of Systems Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences. From 2000 to 2006, he was a research assistant with Prof. PR Kumar at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), working on the capacity and coverage issues of ad hoc wireless networks. In 2006, he received the Ph.D. degree, and subsequently joined Intel Research, Santa Clara. His current research interests include 1) enabling advanced physical/cross-layer cooperation and cognitive resource management in dense wireless networks, and 2) solving the related optimization and information theory problems. He received the Robert T. Chien Memorial Award from ECE, UIUC in 2005, and he is co-author of the monograph “Scaling laws for ad hoc wireless networks: An information theoretic approach.”
