Introduction

This course is a joint venture for the new graduate students of the School of Engineering (Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Bioinformatics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics, and ISTM). The intent of the course is to prepare students for teaching and research in the School of Engineering. This web page is also contains links to other resources of interest to graduate students. The course is being co-taught by Suresh Lodha and Pat Mantey. If you are enrolled in Bioinformatics Program, please contact Kevin Karplus for discussion section, location, and hours.

The TAs for this course are Rosie Wacha (CS). and Fima Leshinsky (CE).

Do not take CMPE200 or CMPS200 for a Letter Grade. You must attend 7.5/9 lectures sections to pass. You must also get a satisfactory in at least 3 of the 4 assignments of which LaTeX and proposal writing are compulsory.

Plagiarism Detection Tools

• Turnitin.com: Great for comparing research pages or reports. Not so useful for code. For more information on how to set up an account, see instructional computing help page.
• MOSS: my code comparison tool of choice, works on C, C++, java, ML, lisp, scheme, pascal, ada, haskell, fortran, ascii, vhdl, html, perl, and matlab. You submit the files to their server and they email you a link to the results.
• SIM: the default code comparison tool at UCSC. Richard Hughey maintains the program on SOE. Here is more information (accessible only from SOE machines).
