CMP200 Texts -- Fall 03
There are two recommended texts for the course,
- TA Handbook (a practical guide for Teaching Assistants at UCSC).
Everyone should have already been given a copy at the Graduate Division
Orientation. If not, you can obtain one from the Graduate Division.
- LaTeX (user's guide and reference manual, 2nd edition, updated for
LaTeX2E).
Leslie Lamport, Addison-Wesley, ISBN: 0-201-52983-1
(The LaTeX Companion by Goossens, Mittelbach, and Samarin
is an acceptable alternative to Lamport's book.)
The two optional texts for the course are:
- A Ph.D. is not enough (a guide to survival in science)
Peter J. Feibelman, Addison-Wesley, 1993
- Bugs in Writing
Lyn Dupre, Addison-Welesy 1998
The first is an indispensable guide filled with sound advice on selecting
a thesis adviser, establishing a research program,
pursuing an academic career, giving talks, and writing papers.
The second focuses common errors in technical writing and lecturing.
These books should be available at the Baytree Bookstore.
They have also been placed on reserve at the Science Library along
with the following two books which you may find useful in writing
your thesis and papers:
- Handbook of Writing for the Mathematical Sciences
Nicholas J. Higham, SIAM, ISBN: 0-89871-314-5
- Writing for Computer Science
Justin Zobel (Springer)
