CMPS 180 Database Systems - Winter 2006


News and Announcements

  • March 14 - Lab 4 deadline is extended to tomorrow (Wednesday), late submission deadline is Thursday. Come to the lab tomorrow if you still have problems.
  • March 8 - The review for final is on next Tuesday (2-3:45PM).
  • Feb 28 - Lab 4 is released (due on March 14), start early, this lab is heavy.
  • Feb 21 - Homework 4 is released (due one March 7) and Class note 9 has been posted.
  • Feb 14 - Lab 3 is released (due on Feb 28).
  • Feb 10 - Class note 7 and 8 have been posted. I've tried to resize the PDF files, but they are still quite large (15.4MB and 17.7MB), so it might take some time to download. Please do me a favor by sending smaller scanned PDF files (use a lower resolution or the FREE scan&email machine in E2 second floor, it requires your student copy card, but won't charge you).
  • Feb 7 - Class note 6 has been posted. Homework 3 has TWO parts: hw3 in homework section and lab3 in lab section, please don't miss the lab part. Midterm will be on next Thursday and we will have a brief review next Tuesday.
  • Jan 31 - Lab 1 is due and Lab 2 is released (due after two weeks).
  • Jan 27 - Class note 5 (15MB) has been posted, it is a big file and takes a while to load.
  • Jan 25 - Class note 4 has been posted.

Class Description

Introduction to the concepts, approaches, tools, and methodology of database design. Covers the entity-relationship model, the relational model, relational algebra, relational calculus, commercial languages (such as SQL and QBE), functional dependencies, normal forms, and design theory. Other topics may include knowledge-bases, constraint databases, and alternative database models.

Lab Assignments:

  • Deadline for submissions: midnight on the due date
  • Late deadline: 48 hours after deadline, 50% will be discounted for late penalty
  • Submission format: use lab tools ONLY, e.g. UNIX submit command, unless otherwise required in lab instructions

You are allowed to ask for help when working on homework and lab assignments, provided that you acknowledge, on the work that you turn in, the help that you received. Points will be deducted if it appears that labor has been divided among multiple students; otherwise, there will be no penalty for small amounts of acknowledged assistance. If you have any questions about these rules, please discuss them with the instructor immediately.
