1) Install SSH software a) For UNIX-like system, e.g. Linux, Mac, Solaris, or BSD variants, ssh should have come with the distribution already. Using command line at UNIX-like systems: ssh YOUR_CATS_USERNAME@unix.ic.ucsc.edu System will ask for password, enter your password and you are connected b) For Windows system, download a copy of SSH Secure Shell Client at http://ftp.ssh.com/pub/ssh/SSHSecureShellClient-3.2.9.exe and install it. There is a useful tutorial for SSHSecureShellCient here: http://www.ucalgary.ca/it/self_help/ssh/win/sshClient.html. Replace hostname with unix.ic.ucsc.edu and replace username with your CATS username, enter password and you are connected. 2) Install Java SDK a) For UNIX-like system, Java should have been installed. If not, then follow this tutorial to set it up: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/install-linux.html. b) For Windows system, a similar tutorial is here: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/install-windows.html 3) Install Eclipse Go to http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/, the webpage can automatically detect your operating system and find the right distribution for you. Click "Download now: Eclipse 3.1.2" and save the zip or tar.gz package to your hard drive. a) For UNIX-like system, type "tar xzf .tar.gz" and it will create a directory called eclipse, go into eclipse directory and type "./eclipse". Eclipse will start up. b) For Windows system, use Winzp or Winrar to uncompress the zip file. A directory called eclipse will be created, go into that directory and double click on eclipse.exe. Eclipse will star up. 4) Access SECURE directory You need a username and password to access the SECURE directory content, e.g. lab assignments, from home.
