HTML is universally and incredibly ugly, both in the markup
language and it its appearance when rendered on a page. I
therefore refuse it as a medium for an essay. Further, no
proprietary M*cr*$*ft software has been used in the construction
of this document.

The statement was formatted into Postscript from GNU Groff
markup language with the mgm macro package, and converted thence
to PDF using ps2pdf. It was archived using RCS, with formatting
controlled by gmake running on a Unix (Sparc Solaris) machine.

The Statement on Teaching, April 2008, is available both as a
PDF and a Postscript file:

stmt/statement-on-teaching.pdf
stmt/statement-on-teaching.ps

The htaccess allows automatic access from *.ucsc.edu. From
other locations, use the word ``perl'' for both the username and
the password.
