Lab Announcements
-
Last lab is this week. Since instruction ends on Thursday, there will be no labs
held on Friday.
- Next midterm will be on Tuesday, Feb. 28th, 2006. A midterm review is avialable here. The last review session will be held on Saturday
at 2pm at the Baskin Engr. Whiteboards.
-
Lab quizes have arrived! Make sure you do the quizes handed out to you during lab. They
measure whether you've actually attempted the lab work. Not all labs have quizes.
- A new section has opened up! This section may not appear on
the Registrar's site, but if you are in either of the Crown lab sections, please see
if you are able to switch to the new section. It will be held in the Crown lab from
2-4pm on Fridays and will be taught by Marinna Lee.
- The first midterm review session was on
Monday, January 30 from 7:30-10:30 PM @ Baskin Whiteboards. -Matthew-
Lab Exercises
Lab Policies and Information
Preparation - Many of the labs will expect you to do some reading or research
ahead of time. Do not come to lab not knowing what the lab will be about!
Group Work - You may work with one other person. Please do not work in groups
of more than two.
Attendance - Attendance is required, and will be taken for all but the first lab.
Lab Make-ups - While there will be no make-ups for attendance, it is expected
that you look over the labs that you missed and try to do them at home. You may, however,
come to a different section to get attendance if you are unable to make it to your own
section.
Quizes - They are here to make sure you do the labs. The grades are:
- 0 - No quiz turned in
- 1 - Quiz/lab attempted
- 2 - Understood/did well in lab
Resources for Class
Free Programs!
There are a lot of free programs for Windows, but here's a few that I (Marinna) recommend:
- PuTTY -
a free SSH client for Windows. You can use PuTTY to do your
homework from home! Just log into unix.ic.ucsc.edu from home with PuTTY.
- WinSCP - a free SFTP/SCP client
for Windows. Allows you to transfer files to and from your home machine.
- Java Editors - You can use your default plain text editor such as Notepad, or you can use
one of the free or shareware tools below. Note, we will not help you learn
how to use the programs listed below, but there are there to let you see
what kinds of tools exist for doing Java development.
- Eclipse (Windows, Linux) - popular and
extensible tool for developing Java as well as many other popular languages.
Eclipse is an open source project with a ton of modules to download to extend
the basic editor.
- TextPad (Windows only) - Simple editing
enviroment that's good for openning and editing most plain text files but
also includes Java syntax highlighting and ability to compile and run Java
programs within TextPad. It's shareware, so it does have purchase reminders.
- jEdit (Windows, Mac, *nix) - written in Java
and is open source. Meant to be a Java development tool. More full-featured
than TextPad, but is centered on being a Java editor instead of a general editor.
