Some Frequently Asked Questions:

Question:
Once my UCSC computer account is activated, how do I log on to it from one of the computer labs on campus?
Answer:  This depends on what kind of lab you're in.
From a PC lab running Windows do the following:
  1. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete.
  2. Log in to the windows system using your UCSC userid and password.
  3. Go to the start button, then select ‘X Windows’ then choose ‘Xterm-SSH on unix.ic’.
  4. A login window will pop up having the fields:
  5. The xterm window (unix shell) will open in your home directory and you can start typing unix commands.
  6. Under this default shell the ‘Backspace’ key will not work. Use ‘Delete’ instead.
  7. If you want ‘Backspace’ to work, change the default shell to ‘bash’ shell by typing the command ‘bash’ (no quotes) at the command line:  % bash.  (Remember don't type the '%' symbol.  It's just what I use here to represent the unix prompt.  Under bash you also have a nice command history feature that allows you to scroll through past commands using the up and down arrow keys.
If you are in a Solaris unix lab do the following:
  1. At the login prompt type in your UCSC userid, then OK, then your password.
  2. Choose CDE Desktop.
  3. Once logged in, right-click at the desktop, go to Hosts and choose Terminal Console.
  4. This will open a bash unix shell for you where you can execute unix commands. ‘Backspace’ and command history will work.

Question:
How can I connect to the campus network from home and do my lab assignment from there?

Answer:  You must have the appropriate network software installed on your computer in order to log on to your UCSC computer account.  Information Technology Services (ITS) offers some free software downloads which include a number of network tools for this and other purposes.  The most important tool you need is the Secure Shell client SSH.  Please note that if there is anything you don't know how to do, then attendance at a scheduled lab session is required for you.  Bear in mind however that the the TAs and Tutors for this course can help you with our assignments, but they might not be able to answer all questions pertaining to the UCSC computer system.  They can however point you to the appropriate resources.  Try the following for more information:  Frequently Asked Questions, ITS Help Desk, or call the ITS help desk 831- 459-4357 (831-459-HELP).
