General Description

  • Basics of information theory, lossless coding (Huffman coding, arithmetic coding, dictionary coding), lossy coding (PCM, predictive coding, transform coding). Application to the compression of specific data sets, including biological time series, and multimedia streams.

  • Textbook:
    • Khalid Sayood, "Introduction to Data Compression", Morgan Kaufmann.

  • Grading: The course work will be weigthed as follows for the final score:
      • Midterm: 40%
      • Final exam: 40%
      • Project: 20%

    • The Midterm will be held on May 10th, 5-6:30 pm.

    • The Final Exam will be held on June 12, 4-7 pm.

    • Note: The midterm and final exam for CMPE 263 will be different (more demanding) than for CMPE 108.

    • Note: All graduate students taking CMPE 263 will have to give a presentation based on a number of papers from a selected list.

  • Prequisites (for CMPE 108)
          • CMPE 107 or MATH 131A
          • CMPS 101
