Lectures
General Description
- The course deals with the fundamentals of telecommunications networks from a mostly technical perspective. It addresses both "what" the Internet is and how services such as email and the Web work.
In completing this course a student should have an understanding of the role of telecommunication network structure, architecture, major components, strengths and shortcomings. The Internet is such a broad topic that it is realistic to posture this as a foundation course both for those that want to use it for personal use and those that plan to pursue the subject of networking in subsequent courses.
- Prerequisites: There are no specific prerequisites to this course but sophomore standing is recommended. All students must obtain an account at CATS. Students who don't have a CATS account should check the CATS web page.
- Textbooks: There is no required textbook. The only required reading are the class notes. Here are some references for the more curious:
- D.E. Comer, Computer Networks and Internets, Prentice Hall
- F.J. Derfler and L. Freed, How networks work, QUE.
- P. Gralla, How the Internet works, QUE.
- Grading: The course work will be weigthed as follows:
- Quizzes 40%
- Final Exam 40% (the Final Exam will be held on December 11, 8-11 am.)
- Project 20%.
- Quizes: There will be a number of quizzes. The dates of the quiz will be posted below.
IMPORTANT
The lowest score you get in the quizzes will be discarded. Therefore, if for any reason you cannot take a quiz, you are covered (the corresponding "0" score will be discarded). If you miss more than one quiz, then you will need to produce a medical certificate justifying your absence in order to take a make-up quiz.
