Course Description:
This course provides a practical introduction to computers: hardware, operating systems, applications software, networking and the Internet, and developments in the computer industry, from an engineering perspective.  Personal computing on a PC platform is emphasized through laboratory exercises designed to provide a working knowledge of basic application packages for word processing (Microsoft Word), spreadsheets (Excel), database management (Access), and elementary programming concepts via the C programming language .  This course is designed for students with little or no experience using computers.

Text: Computers: Tools for the Information Age, 5th Edition. H. L. Capron. Addison-Wesley, 1998.  The website for this book is here. It is recommended that you also purchase an elementary manual for Microsoft Office ’97 such as The Complete Idiot's guide to Office ’97, or Office ’97 for Dummies.

Assignments and Grading:
Homework:  30%
Quizzes:  35%
Final Exam: 35%, to be held Tuesday, March 16 from 12:00 to 3:00 pm.
Grading: The grading distribution will be a straight scale:
A 90%-100%
B 80%-89%
C 70%-79%
D 60%-69%
F 0% -59%
The letter grade boundaries may be lowered slightly at my discretion to eliminate borderline cases.


Integrity of Student Work:

Each student is expected to complete his or her own work and turn it in by the due date. Students may talk to one another about general approaches to various exercises, and receive general assistance from the instructor, TA, tutors, and lab assistants. However, the details of the assignment are to be completed independently, thereby reflecting the individual accomplishments of the student.



How to get an account on CATS (Communications and Technology Services):

If you do not already have a CATS account, register for one as soon as possible. This can be done from any computer lab on campus. Simply log on as "register", when prompted for a password respond "athena", and follow the instructions presented. If you need additional information on how to use the UNIX operating system, email, newsgroups, etc., you should definitely check out the resources at CATS . They are located downstairs in the Communications building.
