Lecture Outlines

These outlines are a general tool for the instructor to outline the lecture. They are meant as a convenience for your note taking. They will be posted AFTER the lecture. But they will not substitute for coming to class. They are by no means thorough and are in fact often cryptic.

ü          During this lecture we also discussed several aspects of personal computer security and available electronic information.  Some of the web sites we discussed were:

1.      Electronic Frontier Foundation -- EFF is a non-profit group of passionate people — lawyers, volunteers, and visionaries — working to protect digital rights.

2.      Total Information Awareness System --The goal of the Total Information Awareness (TIA) program is to revolutionize the ability of the United States to detect, classify and identify foreign terrorists.

3.      Spyware Info -- SpywareInfo, your central location for everything you need to know to protect your privacy on the internet.

4.      Adware -- an applications service provider (ASP), delivers high quality information management systems and services to companies in the marketing communications industry around the world.

ü        In addition to the notes we also looked at various forms of output of information and communication technologies such as:

1.      A presentation of legal issues and technology done using PowerPoint, music, and art.

2.      Software from “Band-in-a-Box” that provides musical notation for computers and playback.

3.      Software from “Cool Edit” that allows you to edit sound files and play them back.

4.      Grameen Family of Companies who are using computer and information technologies to support micro-lending, collation building, and increase incomes in third world countries.

5.      ACCION International a Latin American Company supporting micro-lending and community by providing "micro" loans and business training to poor women and men who start their own businesses.

6.      ATM’s

Christy Hightower, discussed various resources available at the library and presented a tutorial on search strategies.  Some of the web sites visited included:

ü        The list of Article Databases the University has access to http://library.ucsc.edu/Zope/eresources/bytool/ArticleDatabases

ü        And the “Infotrack Article Database” (you need to access through the library’s web site).
