CMPE 003 - Personal Computer Concepts: Software and Hardware - Fall 2005

General Class Information

    Other course materials and communications will be available through the campus WebCT system. If you are having difficulty with WebCT, try the student documentation page. The Create your WebCT account link is particularly useful.

    New students: to activate your UCSC email account, known as CruzMail, log in to the student portal (my.ucsc.edu) and click the link that says Activate UCSC Account.

    Continuing students: if you have forgotten your CruzMail password, you will need to go in person to the Communications building (on Science Hill, next to Baskin Engineering), room 50, to request a new one.

    Required text:
    Computer Confluence, Introductory 7th edition with student CD, by George Beekman. The CD is not required for the course, but may be helpful. Available at Bay Tree (September 22nd) or directly from Prentice Hall. On 2-hour reserve at Science and Engineering Library (3 copies), McHenry Library (1 copy).

    Exam times:
    Midterm Exams (worth 15% each): Thursday October 20th (Chap/Wk 0-3) and Thursday November 17th (Chap/Wk 4-7)
    Final Exam (worth 15%): Monday, December 5th, 4pm-7pm (Chap/Wk 8-10 plus some Chap/Wk 0-7 review)

    Bring a Scantron form F-1712 (pink, available at Bay Tree) and pencils on exam days. If you know you cannot make an exam, or need special arrangements, inform me a week ahead of the scheduled exam time.

    Academic Integrity:
    Cheating in any part of the course may lead to failing the course and dismissal from the university.
    From the Fall 2005 Schedule of Classes: "All members of the UCSC academic community have an explicit responsibility to present as their original work only that which is truly their own.     Course Outline:
    This course covers the concepts of hardware and software used in personal computing. The lectures provide a background in terminology and fundamental concepts. The assignments provide hands-on practice using basic office applications and web tools.
    Credit:
    This course is 5.0 credits. The course satisfies an IN requirement. Students cannot repeat this course for credit. Students cannot get credit for this course and CMPS 2.
    Evaluation:
    45 % = 3 Exams (15% each) NEW: Exams = 1500 points, 1500-1350 A, 1349-1125 B, 1124-900 C
    5 % = Lecture Attendance (verified by a WebCT quiz question on each quiz)
    10 % = 10 WebCT Quizzes (1% each)
    40 % = 4 Homework Assignments submitted on WebCT (10% each)
    ? = Extra Credit

    Your grade will be assigned: A=100%-90%, B=89.99%-75%, C=74.99%-60%, Fail=Below 60%

    Assignments and quizzes submitted after the due date will receive a grade of zero. Missing quizzes, assignments, or exams will receive a grade of zero.

    Assignments:
    Assignment 0 - Send WebCT email to your TA - EXTRA CREDIT - Due Sept 30
    -Click "WebCT EMail" from the left menu.
    -Click on "Compose Message."
    -In the "Send to:" box type in your lab TA email name, either "mmotamed" or "matthewr".
    -In the "Subject" type in "CMPE003, Assignment 0".
    -In the message area, type in your favorite color (Red, Blue, etc.).
    -Click "Send" in the lower left box.
    -If you are in the Wednesday lab, Maryam is your TA.
    If not in a lab, if your last name begins with A-M Maryam is your TA.
    If not in a lab, if your last name begins with N-Z, Matt is your TA.
    -Worth 100 points (1%).

    Assignment 1 - Word Processing - Due Oct 14
    -Submit "assignment1.doc" through WebCT.
    -Do not use the Computer Engineering major.
    -If you use a major that requires few prerequisites, you won't get full credit.
    -100 points for indentation depth of 5 or more classes at some point (5 x 20)
    -100 points for submitting this as a Word 2003 SP1 document "assignment1.doc" (-50 for wrong filename)
    -100 points for using 2 different font sizes (2 x 50)
    -100 points for using normal, bold, italic, and underline (4 x 25)
    -100 points for using bullets with at least two levels of indentation (2 x 50)
    -100 points for no spelling errors (-10 for each error)
    -100 points for correctness to complete the major (-10 per error)
    -100 points for use of centering and left justify (2 x 50)
    -100 points for including a web link which links to a UCSC department site
    -100 points for using 3 different font styles (one serif, one sans-serif, one mono-spaced from pg. 10 of Beekman) (3 x 33)
    -Sample page 1 and Sample page 2 are available as a model for your solutions.
    -Worth 1000 points total (10%) plus up to a possible 100 points extra credit.
