AMS 162 - Spring 2007
General Class Information
This class aims to introduce the statistical concepts and tools
related to computer experiments, with applications in a variety of
fields. The key idea is understanding variability, so that data can
be used to learn about a process while dealing with the variability
inherent in all data. We will discuss tools for displaying data
(visualizing variability), designing experiments (controlling for
variability when collecting the data), and analyzing the results of
experiments (statistical analysis, separating signal from noise, and
assessing significance in the presence of variability). The course
will build up to a project, where students can either choose their own
project to match their interests, or they can do a default project.
The prerequisite is some prior knowledge of probability or statistics,
such as AMS/ENGR 5, 7, 113, 131, CMPE 107, or AP Statistics, or
permission of the instructor. This course will be oriented more
towards computing and practical statistics.
