AMS 005 - Winter 2008

News:

3:26: It’s been a reasonable time since we posted the provisional final scores, and we are getting late in posting them with the registars office. If there are no requests to fix mistakes by today at 4pm, we will consider them final.

3-23:  Provisional final grades are posted below. Many congratulations to the students who did well! There are a few students that should still contact Bruno because there some important questions to be addressed.

3-22: After careful consideration, I (Bruno) have decided no curving is needed on the final exam scores. I believe they already reflect accurately enough the student’s knowledge. I am trying to help the students  who want to pass the class as much as possible, so this consideration included careful (several hours long) re-evaluation of all exams with scores between 50 and 63% (ie. all the borderline passing exams).The list of provisional final scores should be posted sometime on the 23rd.

3-21: It seems the final exam scores are reliable now, they are back online.

3-21: I (Bruno) am being flooded with emails now, some of them can be answered by either reading the list below with correspondence between scores and letter grades or by reading the syllabus (also below). I need to give priority to the pressing questions first, so please don’t be offended if you don’t get an immediate answer to your particular email.

3-21: Username and password to access the scores from outside campus are given in the syllabus (check it out below).

3-21: We are still waiting for homework #10 scores (as of 8:30am), so we can’t publish the provisional final scores yet.

3-21: We have the final exam scores! Congratulations, it is obvious you worked hard and it shows in the grades! I (Bruno) am very happy in particular with the students who were able to make a sizeable improvement from the midterm exam, you obviously didn’t give up and I’m very glad to see your efforts rewarded.  Average score was 72% and I am going to look at all the tests to see if curving the scores is justifiable.

3-20: Just an update. Grading is going as planned and this means there are just two questions left to be graded. I (Bruno) can say that I’m very happy with performance I observed in the question I graded (question 6). I hope we can post the provisional final grade sometime this evening. Check back for news.

3-16: This is a reminder that students with last names starting in A or B or C should go to Porter Coll room 148 for the final exam. You can use this map to find Porter College (keep clicking on it to zoom in, and the room is roughly on the southeast part of the college).

.

3-14: Table for final grades:

F:  less than 50% in final score or final exam.

D: If final exam score is less than 60% and higher than 50%, and final score is higher than 50%.

C: final exam >= 60% and (60% <= final score <65.5%).

C+: final exam >= 60% and (65.5 %<= final score <69.5%).

B-: final exam >= 60% and (69.5% <=  final score <74.5%).

B: final exam >= 60% and (74.5% <=  final score <79.5%).

B+: final exam >= 60% and (79.5% <=  final score <84.5%).

A-: final exam >= 60% and (84.5% <=  final score <89.5%).

A: final exam >= 60% and (89.5% <=  final score <94.5%).

A+: final exam >= 60% and (94.5% <=  final score =<100%).

3-14: Solutions to practice final are available below.

3-13: Calendar for last days of quarter (corrected):

Sun (13-16): MSI Session from 7 to 10pm at ARC.

Mo (13-17):    Regular sections will still be active (it’s still a regular instruction day).

Extra office hour with Kassie: 2-3pm

Extra office hour with Bruno: 5 to 6pm at Jack’s Lounge

MSI Session from 7 to 10pm at ARC

Tu (13-18):  Bruno will be on “anxiety duty” from 12 to 1pm.

Final exam from 4 to 7pm. Please pay attention that all students with last name starting with A or B or C should go to Porter 148 instead of the Media Theater.

We (13-19): AMS5 staff will be enjoying grading your great final exams.

Th (13-20): AMS5 will be sad to be done with the grading (hopefully). Sometime in the evening we expect to post a list of provisional final grades on the website. Check the website for updates.

Fri (13-21): Vaneet will be available from 10-12pm at Jack’s Lounge to give credit for late homework.

Sometime in the afternoon grades will be made official.

3-12: Regarding the change in the formula for calculating the final grade: some students said they were not putting so much work in the homework and that the change in the formula halfway through the quarter was unfair to them. Our intention with the formula change was to help students grades, we don’t want the change to go against a particular student’s grade, so we will only use the new formula if it helps a student’s final grade; if the new formula doesn’t help the student’s grade we will automatically revert to the original formula: 10% for homework and quizzes, 30% for the midterm and 50% for the final. We hope everyone will feel this way we will be fairer in helping their final grade.

3-12: Practice final is available below. Solutions will be posted in the next couple of days.

3-11: The final exam will not cover material related to the z-score (or hypothesis testing), Bruno doesn’t think there’s enough time to mature that knowledge before the final; so homework 10 material will not be covered in the final test.

3:11: The pdf file with extra questions for homework 9 should be solved with confidence intervals for differences in percentages (or averages according to what’s requested in each problem), just like it was shown in class today.

3-10: Homework 10 has been changed. Please check changes below.
