AMS 005 - Spring 2008

AMS 005 - Spring 2008

6-23: The final grades should show in your student portal in a couple of days.

6-14: Final grades are available below. Most students did a fantastic job and we are sure that the ones who didn’t pass are very close to getting a good understanding of the concepts. Note: Bruno took an extra day to look in detail at the final exams with scores below 60% to make sure no mistakes were made and to – unfortunately – confirm the ‘no pass’ score.

6-12:  Grading is finished, and now we will need a day or two to double-check the results (we will look specially at the final exams a second time) and we expect to publish the final scores sometime during the week end.

6-10: If you can come early to the exam (say 15 to 10 minutes before noon) and make sure you seat with a chair between you and the nearest neighbor, it will be very helpful to start the exam on time.

6-6: For all the students that are nervous out there, we have set up additional office hours on Monday. Here’s the whole schedule:

9 to 10am   Vaneet.

Noon to 1pm – Jing.

4 to 5pm – Bruno (answering mostly homework questions).

5 to 6pm – Bruno (answering mostly questions about any part of the course).

6-5: Let us remind the students that the step by step procedures (available below under “class notes”) has been known to help students solving the homework problems and make sure you address all the issues in your answers.

6-5: Solutions to the practice test are given below. Please don’t restrict your studies to the type of questions shown, your best study guide is the list of homework problems.

6-3:  Important dates:

6-5: Filling out evaluation and short review of statistics in class.

6-6: Homework #9 is due

6-9: Extra office hour with Bruno from 4 to 6pm.

       Homework #10 is due

6-10: Final exam at noon in class.

6-16: Publication of final grades on the course’s website

6-3: Table for letter grades:

F:  less than 50% in final class score or final exam.

D: If final exam score is less than 60% and higher than 50%, and final class score is higher than 50%.

C: final exam score>= 60% and (60% <= final class score <65.5%).

C+: final exam score >= 60% and (65.5 %<= final class score <69.5%).

B-: final exam score >= 60% and (69.5% <=  final class score <74.5%).

B: final exam score >= 60% and (74.5% <=  final class score <79.5%).

B+: final exam score >= 60% and (79.5% <=  final class score <84.5%).

A-: final exam score >= 60% and (84.5% <=  final class score <89.5%).

A: final exam score >= 60% and (89.5% <=  final class score <94.5%).

A+: final exam score >= 60% and (94.5% <=  final class score =<100%).

6-3: DRC students: please get in touch with Bruno to confirm if you need final exam accommodations.

6-1: Practice final exam is available below.

5-20: New list of scores below with some missing scores now visible.

5-19: Midterm scores are published below. If you already talked to your TA about corrections, it may take a few days until the correction appear son this list.

5-12: Help in figuring out how to correctly justify your answers in this class; we know one of the challenges students face in this class is that they need to justify their answers. Here’s where you can get some directions on this:

1.        The examples shown in lectures always cover the main justifications we would like to see in your work

2.        In sections, the TAs should always show how a correct answer should be structured.

3.        The step-by-step instructions given in the link below (under “class notes”), can be used as a check list to see if your answer covers the important issues in a particular problem.

4.        If you still have questions about this, we have a big list of office hours. We set up all these office hours because we know you need them, and we like to give all the help we can.

5-8: Feedback from mid-quarter evals: since some students say they can’t make the current office hours, and they want to have more support on how to properly solve the homework and tests questions Bruno will be setting an extra office hour on Thursdays from noon to 1pm, valid from now until the end of the quarter. Lectures will always include one problem similar to homework and a detailed solution of it. Sections should be mainly about solving different problems and the level of detail in the justifications, please let Bruno know if this is not happening.

5-5: Small change to the problems assigned in Chapter 11.

5-4: Change to homework list of problems, Chapter 13 is moved to next week’s homework list. Check the new list below.

5-4: Solutions to the practice midterm are available below.

5-3: Extra office hour with Bruno, this Monday from 5 to 6pm.

5-1: Contrary to what is stated in a prank email that was sent to a lot of UCSC students, there will be class today.

5-1: Practice midterm is available below.

4-29: The midterm will take place one week from today (Tuesday, May 6th) in class. Check the syllabus below for answers to common questions.

4-24: Some students might have received an email as if you had dropped the class, please disregard that email. There is nothing wrong with your enrollment.

4-24: Chapter 11 was moved from homework 4 to homework 5.

4-24: Extraordinary office hour with Bruno tomorrow Friday, April 25th, from 5pm to 6pm. This office hour is mostly to help students with graded homework although we will certainly be glad to help all students with any question.

4-23: There’s been an addition of a extra office hour, Wednesday from 2 to 3pm and Vaneet adjusted his office hour on Friday from 2pm to 3pm. Please check below (on the class syllabus) for the complete list of office hours we made available to you.

4-17: Calendar of homework is re-adjusted to account for the change of Chapter 5. Please see below.

4-17: Some of the information given during lecture is now included in the syllabus more clearly (check below). A direct link to MSI tutoring sessions information is available below.

4-16: Now that everyone’s schedules are settled, we can set up a couple of additional office hours to help you in case you can’t make it to the current ones. Please bring this issue up during tomorrow’s class if you’d like additional office hours to be available.

4-15: Chapter 5 is moved from homework 2 to homework 3. See new list below. This means that homework 3 itself might be changed too, make sure you check this website sometime at the beginning of next week, or just make sure you attend lectures.

4-10: Most of Chapter 19 problems are due tomorrow. It’s only problem 10 in chapter 19 that is postponed until after you learn chapter 6 (check the homework list, that problem is due later on).

4-8: If MSI is not enough to help you, there is additional help available. I’ll quote a message I got from Learning Support Services:

The Tutoring program is available to all UCSC students and is generally small groups (up to 4 people per group). UCSC students are eligible for up to 1 hour per week per course and may sign-up for tutoring using the following address (https://eop-apps.ucsc.edu/OTSS/tutorsignup/) on Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at 10:00 am. All of the tutors we hired are current UCSC  Student who has previously taken the course and received a B or better. Additionally, they have also been recommended to be a tutor from a UCSC faculty member. If the class you are teaching is supported by MSI, students must attend MSI first before they are eligible for small group tutoring.

4-6: The special Academic Success Workshop set for Wednesday at 2pm will take place in room 216 at the Academic Resources Center. It’s free, it doesn’t take long and we’re sure everyone will benefit from it.

4-5: Complete solutions to the self-diagnostic test are available below.

4-3: Class notes with definitions and step-by-step procedures are available below.

4-1: All the info about the course is available below.

3-25:  WELCOME TO AMS5- Statistics. For the time being we can only offer you our welcome and the course syllabus; please check the link below.
