AMS 002 – Fall 2009

AMS 002 - Fall 2009

News:

11-19: Good news: you don’t need to work on problem 42 of section 1E in the book (IRS guide lines). I decided it just takes too long, and I’ll never use a problem like that in an exam anyway.

11-18: Our extra discussions on logic have had an ipact on our schedule; please check below for changes in the calendar and homework list of problems.

11-12: I’m very glad to have an extra office hour tomorrow from 3 to 4pm. Let’s have all those questions on Logic and Venn diagrams!!

11-12: Our classes fell a little behind the homework schedule, so I’m moving the last section of tomorrow’s homework (section 1D) to next week.

11-5: Extra office hour tomorrow from 3 to 4pm!

11-4: I’m very happy and proud to work with the students that came immediately to office hours to have a look at their midterms; I’m very optimistic about their academic success. If you haven’t come over yet, make sure you do as soon as you can!

11-4: I’m thinking of giving an alternative option to calculate student’s final grade. This option uses only the score of the final exam and homework scores. What do you think? Come over to class tomorrow, so that we can discuss this.

11-3: In order to help you believe you can have a very good score in this class (which is already my strong belief) I’m doing two things: one- I’ve curved the midterm scores and two- I promise no one will fail this class on account of the midterm. Just make sure you look carefully at the midterm to see where you need extra practice on.

11-2: Midterm score are available below. There are very promising results (congratulations on your hard work), I haven’t see a single mistake that couldn’t be taken care of in a couple of minutes during offices hours. My STRONG recommendation is for every single student to come over and go over the test carefully (I’ll be glad to help you if you want).

11-2: Friendly reminder: I’m pretty sure no one in the area of the drop off boxes has any staples to give away; most of them are professors who don’t really have a lot of fun being asked many times if they have staples. Please, if you have any questions about anything (availability of staples, where are the toilets, are the Lakers going to win again this year, etc, etc), come to me.

I can tell you right away I don’t think the Lakers will make it this year (I know, it’s a little early, but I’m risking an opinion).

10-27: List of solutions for the midterm has been updated and some mistakes/typos have been corrected. Let me know if you have questions about any of the problems. Tomorrow, I’ll be available an extra hour after the office hour to answer any questions you might have.

10-22: In case you feel a little low on motivation check this short video: http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=198400150523

10-21: Practice midterm is available below. Advice: this exam is much more useful as a dry-run test (a couple of days before the midterm) than as a study guide; the list of homework problems is much more useful in that regard. I propose you solve the test sometime during the week end (pretend it’s the real midterm) and give yourself a score at the end; this way you’ll get an idea of where you’re at and you’ll have a few more days before the real thing to improve your mathematical skills. Let me know if you find any typos/mistakes.

10-21: A majority of students chose to have an office hour on Wednesdays at 3pm rather than Fridays. If the current office hours are not enough to help you, drop me an email.

10-15: Some students asked to have an office hour on Wednesday rather than Friday for the rest of the quarter (from 3 to 4pm); if you have anything against this idea, please come to class on Tuesday to let me know about it. This coming week I’ll also be away on Friday and I have a substitute office hour on Wednesday again (from 3 to 4pm).

10-15: Homework will usually be brought to Tuesday’s lecture (this week is an exception since I’m bringing it today to class) or they can be picked up during office hours. Make sure you stay on top of your progress in homework.

10-9: Office hours for Friday, 16th are exceptionally moved to Wednesday, 14th (3 to 4pm). Bruno will NOT be available for office hours on Friday, 16th.

10-7: Homework 1 scores are available below. You can pick them up tomorrow in class or during office hours.

9-29: For the students who cannot make it to the Tu-Th office hours from 4-5:30pm: would you be able to make it on Fridays from 3 to 4pm? You can either send me an email about this, or make sure you bring this up on Thursday.

9-25: Welcome to AMS2 Pre-Statistics. During the next few days,  information will be added to this website. For the time being, be advised that the required book is: Blizter, Bennett and Briggs (2009), Prestatistics - Custom Edition for AMS2 - UC Santa Cruz. Pearson Education. Be mindful of the fact that you can only buy this book through Bay Tree Bookstore.

9-25: For the students that cannot make it to the first class: make sure you read the syllabus (available below) thoroughly, check the calendar to see what we covered in class, and start working on the homework problems!
